SALES TAX ON SOAP
MASTER GROCERS URGE REDUCTION
‘‘We consider that the time is now opportune for the Minister of Finance (Mr W. Nash) to reduce the cos . of living by reviewing or removing the sales tax on everyday household lines," said Mr C. E. Rawlings, immediate past-president of the Canterbury Master Grocers’ Association, in a statement made to “The Press” yesterday, after a discussion on sales tax ar a recent meeting of the association.
Quoting instances, he sai,d that on present day costs the consuming public were paying 4d a bar in sales tax on laundry soaps, 4sd a packet on standard large size soap powders, and s|d a tin on large size floor polish tins.
“Due to increased costs raw materials from overseas, first grade bar soaps have increased from £35 a ton in 1940 to £64 16s 8d a ton this month. As it was pointed out to the Minister of Finance after the 1948 Dunedin annual grocers’ conference, while our unit profit margin is rigidly controlled, the public are paying 20 per cent, sales tax on the increased costs,” he added.
