SKI-ING ON PASS ROAD

COMPLAINTS MADE BY MOTORISTS TRANSPORT DEPARTMENT WARNING “Ski-ing is all very well, but the roads are hardly the place for it,” said the secretary of the Automobile Association, Canterbury (Mr J. S. Hawkes) last evening, commenting on complaints he had received, during the day from motorists on the main West Coast road who had difficulty in negotiating the road near Porter’s Pass after skiers had used it as a sports ground during the week-end. “There were four inches of snow at the top of the pass, both on this side and on Starvation Gully side, and skiers had packed down the snow until it was like an ice skating rink,” said Mr Hawkes. “Some cars had to turn back and the few that got through had to use chains. I have brought the matter to the attention of the Transport Department and they are going to take the necessary steps,” he added. “Ski-ing on the road is against the law, and if there is any snow there next week-end, we will have a patrol ear there, .and any offenders will be prosecuted,” said the District Officer of the Transport Department (Mr C. D. Pederson), when he was asked to comment last evening.
