TIMARU HOUSING COMMITTEE
TWO MEMBERS RESIGN Two of the eight members of the Timaru civilian housing allocation committee appointed on June 5 by the Minister in charge of Housing (Mr F. Hackett) have tendered their resignations. They are the Mayor (Mr A. E. S. Hanan) and Mrs R. McAlister, <LP., M.8.E., a member of the South Canterbury Hospital Board, and a prominent social worker. Mr Hanan had no comment to make on his resignation and Mrs McAlister said that she wished to concentrate on rehabilitation work which occupied, a great deal of her time. The resignations followed the first meeting of the committee when Mrs D. Newlands, a member of the South Canterbury Hospital Board and the unsuccessful Labour candidate for the Ashburton seat at the last General Election, was elected to "the chair. Other members of the committee are the Rev. F. H. Wilkinson (a retired Presbyterian minister), Messrs J. Oliver, J.P. (secretary of the Timaru branch of the Labour Party), A. S. Kinsman (a member of the borough council, chairman of the council housing committee, chairman of the Timaru Rehabilitation Committee, and a member of the South Canterbury Hospital Board), James McKay (a trade union official), and James Drummond (representing workers’ unions).
