JEWISH AND ARAB VIEWS OF U.S. PLAN
During the debate Mr Aubrey Eban (Israel) said that Israel accepted the United States plan and would comply with any orders to cease fire. However, he objected to conditions in the truce banning the immigration of Jews of military age to Palestine and the shipment of arms to that country, because they would prevent the Jews from arming in preparation for another Arab attack. Mahmoud Fawzl Bey (Egypt) attacked American support of Israel and then said: “We want a cease fire, but much as we want it we must make it possible. Could not the Council con-
centrate on modifying the condition* of the cease-fire by making them acceptable to both aides? Could we not avoid leaving the Arabs the only alternative, which is war?” Fawzi Bey contended that tha American resolution singled out the Arabs as the guilty party end favoured the Jewish cause because the Arabs were at a disadvantage under a truce. The nations which support the American resolution are Britain,. Canada. Belgium, France, and Colombia. Dr. T. F. Tsiang (China) said that he would move an amendment to the resolution to guarantee the Arab* “a just final settlement.” .
