COMPETITION FINALS t UNITED CLUB’S SUCCESSES United I and South Brighton 11, in the senior men’s competition, played off for the Harman Shield on Saturday at Wilding Park. When the teams met in the last round of the competition, United I had a lead of one point. By winning a close match by one point, South Brighton II drew level.

On Saturday United I made a good start and instead of sharing the singles gained a lead of 3-1, due mainly to a surprise win of T. W. Callander over the Wilding Shield representative A. L. Blackwell. For a time it looked as though R. A. H. Howe, top South Brighton II player, might beat R. G. Pattinson, but the Canterbury first ranking player won a good game in the third set. On this occasion, too, both United I pairs won their doubles matches, completing a decisive victory by 5 rubbers to 1.

Only two matches of the round of the senior women’s competition were played on Saturday, and as United I, with a clear lead of one point over all its rivals, won by default from Sumner, the club completed the senior double. Yet another success went to United when its team won the inter-section final of the first mixed grade competition. The play-off in the second mixed grade competition resulted in a win for St. Albans, who beat St. Paul’s by 13 matches to 3. Results:— SENIOR MEN United I v. South Brighton II 'Singles.—R. G.
