LOSS ON BOARDING SCHOOLS

Sir, —In your issue of February 18 there was a notice which read “Boarding Fees at Schools. Four-figure Losses Last Year.” This refers to the Timaru Boys’ and Girls’ High Schools. Now, this has been much discussed in my presenee since, and so I’m asking if you would answer some questions to help us understand. 1. Who stands this four-figure loss—the Government, the board of governors, the Education Board, or who? 2. Are the boarding fees for all high schools (excluding ■ church schools, of course) the same throughout New Zealand (i.e., Timaru, Nelson, Waitaki, or Christchurch, etc.)? 3. Who sets these fees?—Yours, etc., CURIOUS.

March 12, 1948. [This letter was referred to the Education Board and the secretary of the Timaru High School Board of Governors. but no comment was made. When the letter was referred to the Registrar of Canterbury University College (Mr C. C. Kemp) he sajd he assumed that the governing body would stand the loss. This was in answer to the first question. The second —no, he thought the fees varied in each centre. In answer to the third question Mr Kemp said the governing bodies set the fees.]
