CHILDREN’S EARNINGS
Sir,—The question of children’s earnings is universal and too farreaching to be dismissed as frivolous. The child allowance was a gift to mothers that they should not go short to provide extras for their children. no ‘ ; a P° c ket money grant to children. The joy of earning and spending on presents for loved ones is part of family life throughout the civilised world, and schools have a savings bank system so that it ill becomes the School Committees’ Association to start a controversy unless it is proved in isolated cases that children are backward or overworked. Why rob boys who cut lawns for old persons, run messages for busy persons or help in small ways for money for Scouts, Boys’ Brigade. Sunday School or sweets, and cut away their independence. Even picking blackberries to sell would be unlawful. If children are not allowed to work for reward, how come school prize awards?—Yours, etc.. S. M. PAINTER. Temuka, March 16. 1948.
