TRADE IN SOUTH-EAST EUROPE

(Ree. 7 p.m.) BERLIN, March 16. Officials in the Russian zone of Germany to-day announced plans for strengthening trade and economic ties with the Soviet-dominated countries of South-east Europe. The first move will be the conclusion of a trade agreement with Czechoslovakia. Mr Josef Orlopp. Trade Minister in the Soviet zone, in announcing this, said that the Soviet zone did not exclude European countries “which honestly want to co-operate with us.” Poland and the Soviet zone of Germany to-day signed a £14,000,000 trade agreement. The Soviet zone will supply wood, scrap iron, machinery, and chemicals in exchange for Polish coal, iron, non-ferrous metals, and foodstuffs. GERMANS’ RATIONS INCREASED DECISION IN WESTERN ZONES FRANKFURT, March 16. Germans’ rations in the combined British-American zone will be raised on April 1 from 1300 to 1560 calories a day—the highest level since the occupation began. There will also be a greater variety of foods.
