MUTILATION OF TREES

Sir,—Hacking season is upon us. A recent victim is the graceful lime tree at the corner of Carlton Mill road and Rhodes street. The beauty and symmetry of. 30 years’ growth are now sadly marred to give free passage to wires. I admit that the trimmers have worked as neatly as they could, but mutilation is mutilation. I believe there is some device, used in America, to protect both wires and trees. Could not something be done here to save the more beautiful article? Trees take so long to grow: an alteration to wiring is not a long process. I fear for the magnificent planes and the lime trees which grace and redeem Cathedral square. Are these “on the little list,” or can they be left to show the Royal Family and, later, visitors to our centenary that we have some pride in the appearance of our city?—Yours, etc., ARBOR.
