EMPIRE GAMES IN 1950

CHRISTCHURCH SUGGESTED AS VENUE “If the centennial exhibition is postponed, would it be possible to hold the Empire Games here?” asked’ Cr. J. sN. Clarke yesterday, when the Prime Minister (Mr P. Fraser) met the provisional directors to discuss the question of holding the exhibition. “It is not for me to say,” replied Mr Fraser. He thought it would be very fitting if the games could be held in Christchurch in the centennial year, but it was not yet certain if they would be held in New Zealand at all. He suggested that the centennial committee meet the games committee. It lay between Auckland and Christchurch, and it was said that Auckland had everything that was required. “We would be very glad to have the games in New Zealand, and my first choice would be Christchurch, because it will be its centennial year,” added Mr Fraser.
