ROAD SAFETY COUNCIL
WIDER REPRESENTATION GIVEN
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, March 7. Announcing the reconstitution of the New Zealand Road Safety Council yesterday, the Minister of Transport (Mr F. Hackett) said that he had decided to increase representation on the council to include as far as possible all interested sections of the community. Members of the new council are Mr Hackett. Minister of Transport (chairman); Mr G. L. Laurenson, Commissioner of Transport (deputy-chairman); Mr D. G. Ball, representing the Director of Education; the chairman of the Main Highways Board (Mr F. Langbein); the Commissioner of Police (Mr J. Cummings); Messrs E. R. Neale, M.P.. representing the municipalities; W. G. Belton, Counties Association; W. I. Deavoll. education boards; R. H. Newbold, motor vehicle insurance companies; N. Gilchrist, teaching profession; Dr. S. D. Rhind, medical profession; Mr C. E. Owen, newspapers; Miss M. Magill, women’s organisations; Messrs C. R. Edmond, motor trade; H. 'J. Knight, transport operators; A. C. Melville, transport drivers; W. H. Erown, North Island motorists; R. Wilson, South Island motorists; T. Wickham, sports car clubs; A. McLaren, motor-cyclists; and I. M. Plimmer, cyclists. The first meeting of the new council has been called for March 10, when several important aspects of traffic safety will be considered, including a review of the present measures being taken to combat road accidents.
