IDLE TRAWLERS IN BRITAIN
OWNERS’ REFUSAL TO PAY COAL INCREASE SHORTAGE OF FISH THREATENED (Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.) (Rec. 8 p.m.) LONDON, January 12. Sixty fishing trawlers are tied up at Grimsby and 1000 men are idle because of the refusal of a number of trawling companies to pay the increase of 25s a ton demanded by the National Coal Board for bunker coal. Talks between representatives of the owners and the board this week were indecisive, and will be resumed this week. In the meantime, more and more boats are tying up in British fishing ports, and a general fish shortage i& threatened. At present the Hull and Fleetwood fleets are operating on coal purchased before the rise in price was announced. but it is expected that unless a settlement is reached promptly they also will be involved. The Scottish Herring Producers’ Association. which controls a . large number of vessels operating from Scottish ports, has instructed its members not to buy coal at the new price.
