NEW BRIGHTON

Sir, —The City Council is to be congratulated on the improvements made since amalgamation, but there is much more to do; for instance, the gutters. Observations indicate changes on the beach, the best and safest in the Dominion. Large quantities of sand have been removed and a motor parking area is being formed south of the pier, which is good for the motorist, who can use his car as an improvised bathing convenience. My object in writing is respectfully to suggest that the sea front is not allowed to become like Sumner, where, according to a picture in the excellent book of Christchurch by the Junior Chamber of Commerce, cars extend the length of the beach so closely packed as to make it inconvenient to get on to the beach. It would be attractive and convenient if the roads at New Brighton leading to the beach could be’ levelled on to it. —Yours, etc., EDGAR J. STEEDS. January 12, 1948.
