FARM WORKERS’ WAGES
Sir, —I am a fully qualified and experienced married farm hand. I would like to be enlightened on the following points: my wages last year were £5 10s a week, less 10s house rent. Now ,they are raised to £6, and my rent has been raised to 15s a week. Is my employer entitled to increase the rent, or, under the new award, is he entitled to charge rent at all? He also refuses to give me retrospective pay. Now, what redress do I have, or is it a case of another drift to the city, where I would earn above the minimum wage without crawling for it?—Yours, etc., | IMPOSED UPON. January 10, 1948. [An official of the Department of Labour and Employment said that the above matter would be investigated if the correspondent would get in touch with the department.]
