SEVEN HOUR SHIFT IN MINES
NORMAL WORKING HOURS RESUMED Al DOBSON
The Dobson Miners’ Union has decided to discontinue the sevenhour shift and to remain in the mine until 4 p.m., the normal knock-off time. Last week the union decided to work the seven-hour day, bank-to-bank. at the Dobson State Mine. The only mine yesterday working the sevenhour shift was Wallsend. The Wallsend miners decided last week to adopt the same policy as the Dobson men, but they did not meet before commencing work yesterday morning, as did the Dobson union. No official explanation has been given of the original decision made at Dobson, or of the change yesterday. It is likely, however, that it is connected with the request of the miners’ national organisation that the seven-hour day should commence on April 1, a request already acceded to by the Runanga State miners
