FIRST GAMES IN SINGLES TOURNAMENT DELAYED BY RAIN (P.A.) DUNEDIN, January 12. The thirty-third championship tournament of the New Zealand Bowling Association began in Dunedin to-day in showery weather. The start was delayed by a heavy downpofir. Play started on the Port Chalmers green at 9.30 a.m., and shortly after a start was made on other greens. The. rain had not seriously affected playing surfaces except to make them somewhat heavy, but in the afternoon as they dried out they were tricky. Although play in some games began an hour and a half behind schedule it was possible to complete the original programme of three games before the end of the day. In spite of a number of withdrawals sufficient replacements were offering to enable 880 players *to take part in the singles. Twenty-eight greens were used and entries have been divided into 55 sections. The singles competition is being conducted on a two-life system. D. Vaughan (Caledonian), three times the Dunedin champion of champions, and C. E. Tyrrell (Mornington), a former Dominion pairs winner, both scored comfortable wins in their first two games on the Port Chalmers green, and their meeting in the third round provided an unexpectedly easy win for Tyrrell by 19-7. W. Marshall (Georgetown), the Southland singles champion, playing on the same green, started off with a runaway win against the well-known Central Otago player, T. E. Sunderland (Aleaxndra), 30-9, and also won his second game fairly comfortably. He lost his third game. P. H. Edwards, who .was a member of the winning pair in 1944, won his first two games comfortably, but lost his third game against S. Brewer (Invercar-: gill R.S.A.), 20-18. W. F. Hadwin (Lower Hutt), who has been prominent in post-section play in many tournaments, won his first game by default, and in the second round beat R. E. McNish (Canterbury), a former South Island pairs champion, 22-10. He went on to complete the day without loss. Three members of F. G. Mingin's Onehunga rink won their three games in the singles. Mingins had three comfortable wins, and F. Livingstone, the 1936 cham pion, nnd J. Macklow, will each enter the fourth round with two lives in hand.

W. Bremner (Epsom), «Mr) of the winning four in 1924 and 1929, and also of the winning rink at the Empire Games in 1938, had a close win in his first game, beating R. Tatterson u.akaia). 15-14. but he went on to win the next three games W. R. Hawkins and E. P. Exelby each won three games with something to spare. Lyttelton Player Beaten After winning his first game against H. Wales (Lyttelton), 25-4, W. O’Neill (Runanga) went on to win his next two, while A. Clarke (Ashbury), who w'as run-ner-up in 1944, also finished the day with two lives.

N. W. McGorlick (Bluff), who has had many successes in Otago and Southland, but is competing in the Dominion tournament for the first time, won his three games comfortably. S. C. K. Smith (North End, Invercargill), skip of the winning pair last, year, won all three, gafnes. C. Spearman (Christchurch R.S.A.), winner of the singles title in 1937 and 1941. and skip of the winning rink in 1944, had a close contest with J. B. Kirkland (Mornington) in the second round. Spearman finished the day without loss. S. Vella, the present singles champion, brought a further success to the Onehunga Club by winning his first three games by comfortable margins. N. Donaldson (Ponsonby), who was prominent in the 1944 tournament at Dunedin, won his first three games comfortably. A. W. Alloo (Nelson),. 9 former Otago and New Zealand representative cricketer, who won his first two games, accounted for R. Haworth (Canterbury), winner of the fours twice, and the pairs once, in the second round by 20-14. In the third round, Alloo was beaten by C. Jarvis (Otago).

W. Freeth (Nelson), who entered the final last year with two lives, but who was beaten by Vella, twice got away to a good start, but was beaten in the second round by T. E. Barton (Marton).

W. D. Bennett, winner of the singles in 1938, lost one game. He was beaten in the second round by.the Southland player, A. L. Adamson (Waihopai), 22-10. J. A. Veitch (Dunedin), a former pairs champion, won his three games.
