HIROSHIMA
_ Sir, —Your correspondent, H. J. Buttle, has rightly directed attention to the appalling moral significance of Hiroshima. I fully agree that if western civilisation decides to continue the use of atomic weapons in possible future warfare, it may fitly be branded as a “devilisation”—capital “d.” If told that it may be necessary to repeat Hiroshima, on a bigger scale, in order to preserve our economic and political freedom, should the existing conflict between western and eastern democracies become more acute, an answer is forthcoming. Some of us would submit to live in a police state or face obloquy or death itself rather than support the proposed alternative. The continuance of a humane civilisa'tion is at stake. Some other way of permanently securing our valued human freedom must be seriously sought until found, if complete moral collapse is to be averted.—Yours, etc T , A.L.’ January 10, 1948.
