HOLIDAY TRAFFIC

.COMMISSIONER WARNS MOTORISTS In spite of the restrictions on petrol, it was expected that traffic this Christmas would be as heavy as ever experienced in New Zealand, sajd the Commissioner of Transport. Mr G. L. Laurenson,- in a statement issued to the press. Because of the increased hazards associated with heavy traffic, drivers should ensure that their cars were in good mechanical condition before they started. “Drivers should make sure that their brakes, steering and lights are in good working order,” he said. “If there is any possible doubt it is better to have the car checked by an expert. Drivers should make sure that the load orf the car is not too great for the tyres, especially if they are at all worn.”

“If at all possible,” said Mr Laurenson, “holidaymakers should make an early start on their trip. They should plan to. get away in plenty of time, and avoid the need for fast travelling. Speed not only causes accidents, but also wastes petrol, and places an unnecessary strain on the driver.

“While our road accident rate over the last summer holidays was not as bad as had been experienced in the past. I would urge all who will be on the roads this year to exercise constant care, and help to make this holiday season even more accident free,” concluded Mr Laurenson.
