KINDERGARTEN

RACING

FORMER CHAMPION MAY

RACE AT OTAKI The former champion Kindergarten may make his reappearance in the Raukawa Handicap at Otaki to-morrow. Kindergarten was first retifed from racing because of recurring unsoundness in

™ IMS. In January of that year he won the Hazlett Gold Cup, and it was thought that that was his last appearance. However, an attempt was made to train Kindergarten in 1846, and at the Wellington spring meeting, held at Awapuni in October of that year. Kindergarten ran third to Sonen and Longsword in the Harcourt Stakes, but he was only a shadow of his former self.- Many regretted the champion’s reappearance, and when He was sent home shortly after that - race it was thought that he had finally finished racing. Recently he entered the charge of Mr L. C. Breakwell, of Dannevirke, who has had considerable success in patching up unsound horses, of which Hunting Cat was probably his most notable success. Recently at the Woodville meeting Kindergarten gave an exhibition, gallop on the plough. He looked well and his appearance suggested he had done a good deal of work, but the acid test will come when he races.

Kindergarten is now 10 years old. and his age and recurring unsoundness weigh heavily against his making a Fresh Rider for Magical As C. McDonald is hot certain whether he will be fit enough to ride at the holiday meetings, L. J. Ellis has been engaged to ride the two-year-olds, Magical and Musselman, at the Auckland Cup meeting. Yesterday McDonald advised their trainer, F. D. Jones, that as there was no certainty when he will be fit to resume riding, it would be better to secure another rider for Auckland at an early date, and accordingly L. J. Ellis was engaged for the two-year-olds, but riders still have to be engaged for Palm Bearer and Banshee. McDonald says that if he is fit to resume riding he will attend the Dunedin, Waikouaiti, and Oamaru meetings. On Easy List

Coral Arc has been let up since he raced in the Stonyhurst Handicap at Riccarton last Saturday, as he will not be racing over the holidays. He is showing very little signs of tenderness in his feet at present, and a good spell may be of great benefit to him. A decision will be made in the next few days whether Coral Arc will be prepared for racing at Trentham in January or put aside until the autumn. A Sprint Prospect

Sea Fury finished brilliantly into fifth place in the Stewards’ Handicap at Riccarton, and with a repetition of that form she should race prominently in the Huia Handicap at Otaki to-morrow. Before the Stewards’ Handicap, in which she carried .7-22, Sea Fury carried 7-3 and ran second to Theocritus in the J. R. McDonald Memorial Handicap at Levin on November 8. An apprentice allowance reduced Theocritus’s weight to 8-8. so the pair met at a difference of 191 b. To-mor-row Sea Fury has 7-7, and assuming that the full allowance is claimed for Theocritus, the pair will now meet at a difference of 271 b. High-class Rack Double Chance won his third race in succession and his fourth for the season when he won the Titirangi Hack Handicap in impressive style at Avondale last Saturday. Double Chance made light of his 9-6 and won comfortably after being near the rear at the end of the first furlong. Starting his run with five furlongs to. go, he ran round the field and was almost on terms with the leaders turning for home. * Once into the straight he ~ soon took charge and went on to win pulling up. Double Chance is trained at Takanini by F. Smith, and his next start is to be in the Queen’s Plate at Ellerslie on Boxing Day. The Queen’s Plate is a set weight race over a mile for hacks at the time of nomination. Three-year-olds carry 8-0 and four-year-olds and upwards 8-9, and under such conditions Double Chance is likely to take a lot of beating. One of his opponents wnl be the New Zealand Derby winner, Liebestraum. Double Chance is a goodlooking chestnut colt by Nizami from the good mare, Golden Hair, by Limond from Lady Cavendish, by Absurd from Bonny Portland, by Boniform from Helen Portland, by Dorchester. This family has produced many good -winners. Golden Hair won 12 races including the Victorian and the Great Northern Oaks, and the Thompson Handicap. Lady Cavendish won 11 races and £6445 in sfakes, her successes including a division of the A.R.C. Railway Handicap and the W.R.C. Wellesley Stakes and the Wellington Stakes. She was a half-sister to that fine sprinter, Reremoana, which won ’24 races and £12,800 in stakes, including the A.R.C. Easter Handicap twice and the Thompson Handicap twice, and the A.R.C. King’s Plate. At the stud Golden Hair has not been a great success, and Double Chance looks as if he is easily the best of her progeny to date. Related to Queen of Song Regal Gold, the winner of the first division of the Sapling Stakes at Avondale last Saturday, was making his first appearance in a race. He raced smoothly and more should be heard of him later. He is a big and particularly well-developed chestnut gelding by Salmagundi from Warden’s Queen, and was sold at the Trentham sales last January to Mr H. Tyler for 600 guineas. He was bred by Mr G. J. H. Reid, of Rotherham. His dam. Warden's Queen, is a half-sister by Man’s Pal to the high-class mare. Queen of Song, which won 18 races and £5516 in stakes. She raced at a time when stakes were but a fraction of what they are to-day, and her wins included the V.R.C. C. B. Fisher Plate, Great Autumn Handicap, Wellington Cup, and the Dunedin Cup. With size in his favour, Regal Gold may be a better three-year-old than a two-year-old. Winner at Avondale

Finest Hour, the winner of the second division of the Sapling Handicap at Avondale, is another of the stock of the Sydney Cup winner, Contact, which is being represented by an increasing number of winners each season. Finest Hour was sold at the last yearling sales at Trentham for 160 guineas, and is now trained by H. E. Gray at Takanini. A bay filly from Hauteur, Finest Hour is not bred to make an early two-year-old. Her dam, Hauteur, is by Honour from Egotism, by Demosthenes from Conceit, by Boniform from the imported mare. Lady Wayward 11, the ancestress of many good winners, including The Joker (Wellington Cup, Great Autumn Handicap, and Metropolitan Handicap}, Lord Nuffield (Stewards’ Handicap}, Bashful Lady (Winter Cup twice), Royal Artist (Wellington Cup), and Jaloux (A.R.C. Summer Cup) The latter was a half-brother to Hauteur, the dam of Finest Hour. Education Started

The two-year-old Salmagundi filly purchased by Mr A. Kyle at the South Island bloodstock sale last month for 450 guineas is at present being broken in by V. A. Lee. She is a well-grown individual and possesses more size than some of the Salmagundi fillies. Her dam, Rhea, is also the dam of the successful jumpers Rockery and Prince Dolomite.

Concrete in Open Company Concrete won his way out of hack company with an impressive performance in the Borough Hack Handicap, of seven furlongs, on the first day of the Woodville meeting on November 29, and to-morrow will race among the open sprinters in the Huia Handicap at Otaki, in which he has At his last start, Concrete lost at least 12 lengths at the start, and was still . six lengths behind the field with three furlongs to run, but he went round the field on the turn and won going away by a length. Concrete will not be able to give such .ground in open company, but on that performance he should not be without prospects. A five-year-old gelding by Royal Chief from Definite, Concrete is trained at Otaki by his owner, Mr D. V. Debreceny.

Railway Handicap Candidate The Railway Handicap candidate Theocritus, is top-weight with 9-13 in the Huia Handicap at the Otaki meeting tomorrow. He is likely to claim the full apprentice allowance and will be one of the favourites. After failing at his first start this season Theocritus won at his next two starts. At his last start he carried 9-0 and outclassed the field in the Oete Handicap at Woodville on November 29. Theocritus was accepted for in the Stewards’ Handicap, but* was not brought to Riccarton. In the Railway Handicap he has 9-0, the same weight as Majesty, but a win in the Huia Handicap on Saturday would make him liable for rehandicap. However, as Majesty won the Avondale Challenge Stakes, for which he could not be penalised in the Railway Handicap, Theocritus might escape a penalty if he wins to-morrow. After his impressive win in the Avondale Challenge Stakes, Majesty is a warm favourite for the Railway, but Theocritus has already proved his worth in metropolitan company, and will not be without a •strong following if he is taken to Auckland for the Railway Handicap. Four Representatives in Race

The Awapuni trainer, C. J. Thomson, will have Arco, Broiefield, Langue d’Or, and Yasda to represent him in the Raukawa Handicap at Otaki to-morrow. The first two named race in the same interests. The respective riders will be J. Garth, V. J. Sellars, G. R. Tattersail, and K. Chote.

Copper Coin in Light Work E. A. Rosewarne has made another start on Copper Coin, but for at* least two months she will only be hacked about. Copper Coin has greatly benefited by her enforced spell, having furnished considerably. She is now a powerful mare and it is easy to see why she is such a good weight carrier. Copper Coin won her way out of hack company in impressive style at the Grand National meeting and her first apearance in open company will be awaited with interest. Hazlett Gold Cup Nominations Nominations for the Hazlett Gold Cup to be run on the second day of the Dune-

din Cup meeting on December 28 are:— Batal. Detajn, Delias. Excellency, Hart Royal. Indian Dawn, Irish Note, John Gay, Red Pickle, Sea Flower. Silvft Link Salmon Spear. Special Flight, Te Anau Lady, Wantwood.
