TREASON TRIAL IN WARSAW
UNUSUAL PLEA OF NOT GUILTY
(Rec. 10.p.m.) LONDON, Dec- 10. Walter Lipinski pleaded not guilty when he appeared yesterday in a Warsaw military court on charges of treason and espionage. He is one of six alleged underground leaders who are being tried at the same time as Maria Marinowska, a former British Embassy employee. Lipinski admitted that he was a member of a “National Independence Party,” which consisted of himself and two others. He drafted a memorandum to the United Nations last year to draw the world’s attention to the Polish situation. His party was secret because there was no political freedom in Poland and it was impossible to carry on a legal opposition party. His party aimed at restoring citizens’ freedoms.
The British United Press correspondent in Warsaw says that Lipinski is believed to be the first defendant in a Polish military court since 'the end of the war to plead not guilty. Usually persons accused have after long imprisonment admitted guilt, either wholly or partially.
