BUILDING FOR WATERSIDERS
SITE TO BE BQUGHT IN LYTTELTON The Lyttelton Harbour Board, on the motion of Mr R. E. Cairns, yesterday decided to take steps to acquire as the site for a new watersiders’ building the section in Norwich quay formerly occupied by the Old Lyttelton Hotel. The secretary (Mr A. L. Burk) reported on a meeting called by the Waterfront Industry Commission to discuss a site for the new building. This meeting had recommended the Norwich quay site. Mr Burk added that the Lyttelton waterfront employers had announced their opposition to any site north of the present railway lines. Mr H. Holderness said the employers contended that there would be too much delay in getting men to ships if the watersiders’ building was m Norwich quay. Mr Cairns and Mr T. M. Charters said there was no suitable site on the seaward side of the railway.
The chairman (Mr W. S. Mac Gibbon) explained that the board had offered to provide a site for the new building, and £lO,OOO towards the cost of erection.
Members said the cost of the site would be about £l5OO and that of the building about £60,000.
