EXTENSION OF UNIVERSITY
SATISFACTION WITH DECISION The Canterbury University College Council had learned with satisfaction of the Government’s general confirmation of the plan to extend the college on property adjacent to the present site, said the chairman ‘(Mr W. C. Colee) yesterday. This advice had been awaited for several months and would assist in all considerations of future development, though actual building could not be contemplated at present.
Details of the owners of property in the block immediately north of the present college block, the sections and buildings, and valuations had been assembled. Steps tp take over property would probably not be taken immediately, because of the building position; bpt if any section came on the market arrangements would be made to secure it for the college. At present, only one major building project had been approved for each college, and progress with the erection of the three-storey chemistry block in Christchurch had been held up because of the shortage of materials. Test bores on the site of the £ resent Students’ Association building ad proved satisfactory. “Nevertheless, the Government’s announcement is important. It means that the college as a whole will continue to take its proper place in the heart of the city, instead of extending in the suburban districts,” Mr Colee concluded.
