INDUSTRIES FAIR IN 1948
DECISION MADE BY MANUFACTURERS Approval of a recommendation that the New Zealand Industries Fair should be held again in 1948 was given by the council of the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association at its meeting yesterday. Mr J. Bradley was appointed chairman of the executive for the 1948 Industries Fair. The chairman of this year’s executive (Mr T. H. Lawn) presented a report on the fair which was held m October and November. He said that the figures had not been completed, but the fair was a definite improvement on that held the year before. The total paid attendance was 82,155 compared with 105,000 last year. There was a drop in gate revenue of £974, the executive having estimated gate income at £3250 in its budget before the fair. Ticket sales were approximately £260, compared with £285 last ye After Mr Lawn had presented his report, Mr C. S. Peate said that if Canterbury was going to have an exhibition in 1950, it might pay the association to consider whether it should carry on with the fair next year. “I don’t see how we can afford to drop the fair in 1948,” said Mr B J. Rasters. “The exhibition will not be held until 1950. and it would not be wise to drop the fair in 1948. That would mean we would not have an Industries Fair for four years. The people of Christchurch look for it.” The council also decided that the incoming Industries Fair executive should be empowered to appoint an assistant manager. Appreciation was expressed of the work done by Mr D. R. Smith in this position.
