COMPLAINT BY S.P.C.A.

WATERING STOCK AT A. AND P. SHOW “I think it is a most ridiculous letter to receive from an association like that —they know nothing about animals as far as the farm is concerned,” said the chairman of the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association (Mr G. H. Grigg), commenting on a letter- received from the Canterbury Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals at a meeting of the general committee of the association yesterday. The letter stated that the society’s inspector had noticed that no water was laid on to the pig pens at the recent show, and that at the tinie of his visit the troughs were dry and the animals appeared to be affected by the heat. There were plenty of facilities available for watering the pens, including Luses, said Mr L. T. Wright. A member: There is probably no water laid on at home. The secretary (Mr M. E. Lyons): I would be very much surprised if there was. There is water laid on at the pens, and naturally it is within the province of each exhibitor to give his pigs what he thinks they need. I am just a little amazed to see this letter. It was decided to write to the society stating that the association was quite satisfied with the position, as there was any amount of water available for stock.
