FREEZING WORKS STRIKE
NO SETTLEMENT YESTERDAY (P.A.) AUCKLAND, Dec. 9. There was no settlement of the strike at the freezing works of R. and W. Hellaby to-day, and it is underSood that no negotiations were held. A meeting of the strikers took place in the morning, and further committee meetings are continuing, but efforts to discuss the matter with the Government have so far not been successful. According to the industry the dispute is not likely to affect shipments of food to Britain, as other works are handling sufficient stock to maintain exports. While there was no suggestion today that the trouble would spread, a stop-work meeting will be held at Westfield to-morrow to hear the executive’s views on the matter. The dispute is being handled by Hellabys’ section of the Freezing Workers’ Union, which decided to strike when a secret ballot was taken on Monday. The strike is the result of the dismissal of more than 40 freezing chamber workers who refused to handle unboned bobby calves for export last week. "
