MAORI GIRLS’ COLLEGE

ANNUAL MEETING The provision of an assembly hall for Te Wai Pounamu Maori Girls’ College as a possible long-term aim of the Friends of the College was mentioned by the president of the Friends of Te Wai Pounamu (Mr W. S. Mac Gibbon) when he presided at their annual meeting last night. Other objects which the Friends should consider were the stocking of the library with good books and the provision of further equipment for the college, he said.

Mr J. Roy Smith (treasurer of the organisation) said that it was hoped, as an increasing number of girls went through the college, that their influ-/ ence on the Maori race would be very widespread. The Dean of Christchurch (the Very Rev. A. K. Warren), speaking at the annual meeting of the college, which was held before the meeting of the Friends, and at which Canon G. Nelham Watson presided, moved a vote of thanks to the principal TMrs J. Daniels), staff, and voluntary and visiting staff of the college, who, he said, had all been equally unstinting in serving the cause of the education of the Maori girls.

Tributes were aj.so paid to the untiring service given to the college by the organiser of the Friends and honorary registrar of the college (Mr John Stewart).

Mr Stewart, in presenting a short statement of accounts, said that of the total receipts for the year of £l6OO, £1293 had been paid as fees. During the last five years only three persons had not paid the fees in full, and these persons had only small amounts owing. “Although we call on the general public to assist in the development of the school, it is really the parents of pupils who keep the school going,” Mr Stewart added. The following were elected to the college council: Mesdames T. E. Chisnall and L. Clark. Mr H. S. Hobbs, and Canon S. Parr. The following officers of the Friends of Te Wai Pounamu were appointed: president. Mr W. S. Mac Gibbon; vicepresidents, Sir Joseph Ward, Mr W. G. V-. Fernie; honorary treasurer. Mr J. Roy Smith; honorary organiser. Mr John Stewart; honorary secretary. Mr David S. Cowie; executive committee, the above officers and Mesdames A. H. Rothenberg, A. J. Benzie, H. S. Feast, R. H. Howell. A. Jlose. J. Roy Smith, Canon G. Nelham Watson. Messrs A. A. Perry, C. D. W. L. Sheppard, G. Oakleigh Greenwood, and Dr. I. L. G. Sutherland.

Because of the restrictions on the congregating of school pupils it was not possible to present the programme which had been arranged by pupils of the college. In place of this, items were given by members of the College Old Girls’ Association, who held their annual reunion last evening.
