DAIRY COMMISSION CHAIRMAN

PENSION OPPOSED IN COUNCIL (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Nov. 19. “A shady and backstage method of handling the industry’s business” was the description given by Mr W. Grounds (Hokianga) in the Legislative Council to-day to the provision in the Finance Bill for payment tc the chairman of the New Zealand Dairy Products Marketing Commission of a retiring allowance. Mr Grounds said he regarded the provision as a reckless, precipitate handling of the funds of the dairy industry, and complained that the provision placed the power of determining the allowance in the hands of the Government. “Will not that disturb seriously the independence the chairman is supposed to enjoy?” asked Mr Grounds. The Leader of the Council (Mr D. Wilson) said that when salaries of members of the Dairy Commission were settled pension rights were not thought of. but on reconsideration it found it essential that some provision should be made. He understood the retiring allowance would be similar to that of a judge who had held his position for five years.
