SENTENCES ON BOOKMAKERS

‘•GAOL UNWARRANTABLE” MAGISTRATE REFERS TO ROYAL COMMISSION’S INQUIRY (P.A.) PALMERSTON NORTH, Oct. 30. Bruce John Clarke was fined £l5O in the Palmerston North Magistrate’s Court this morning when he appeared before Mr A. A McLachlan, S.M., on a charge of bookmaking. The Magistrate said the accused had had previous convictions for the same offence, but as last time was August, 1942, he could be treated almost as a statutory first offender. Unfortunately, the factor that was putting many old bookmakers back into harness was the costly Royal Commission, which recently spent considerable time going into the matter, continued the Magistrate. At that time Courts were determined to stamp out bookmaking by imposing short' terms of imprisonment, but now the gaol sentence seemed unwarrantable.
