RANGATIRA’S ROUGH PASSAGE

WORST FOR SOME YEARS Mrs Sarah Gordon, aged 66 years, ot 16 Catherine street, Timaru, was thrown from her bunk on the Rangatira during the steamer expresss rough crossing of Cook Strait to Lyttelton on Tuesday night. Mrs Gordon suffered severe head injuries and shock and is now in the Christchurch HosP First-aid was given Mrs Gordon on the ship and, in response to a radio message, Du P. A. M. Heath and an ambulance were waiting at Lyttelton when the Rangatira berthed at 10 a.m. yesterday, three hours late. It was the roughest trip the Rangatira had had for several years. Big head seas were met throughout the voyage and there was no abatement until the ship reached the heads at Lyttelton. At times the wind blew at force 10 ojn'The Beaufort scale. Minor danjage was done to fittings above deck and to some of the 33 motor-cars carried on deck. The Rangatira was carrying 25 racehorses, but they arrived unhurt. The accident to Mrs Gordon happened soon after 10 o’clock on Tuesday night, when the ship was in Cook Strait. To enable passengers froin the Rangatira for the south to connect, the departure of the Christchurch-Dune-din express was delayed for three hours, until 11.35 a.m. The express was expected to reach Dunedin at 8 o’clock last night.
