PRICE OF VEGETABLES
Sir,—May I ask the local Price Tribunal officer if the net cost of vegetables into store is taken into consideration by the retail trade, and also what percentage of profit is allowed on vegetables, such as lettuce, cabbage, cauliflowers, etc. I personally consider that the Price Tribunal officers are doing a wonderful job of work, and that the producers and consumers fully recognise and appreciate their efforts. —Yours, etc., • BADLY BITTEN. October 24, 1947. [Lettuces and cauliflowers were not controlled by price orders, said the district officer of the Department of Industries and Commerce at Christchurch (Mr H. Fl Larsen) when this letter was referred to him. The price of cabbages was fixed by Price Order 678, which stated that the maximum retail price was to be made up of the cost of the vegetables and container, plus the transport charges, plus 50 per cent., but this was not to exceed the price set out in the schedule. The scheduled retail price for October was 51 d per lb for spring cabbages, and 3|d for Drumhead and Savoy varieties. The retail price of other vegetables was worked out on the same lines, except that only 40 per cent, was added to the. cost of vegetables, container, and transport]
