HELP FOR BRITAIN
Sir, —In a discussion on petrol saving at the annual conference of the South Island Motor Union the president is reported as having said that “there was a British Iranian oil company. Why couldn’t it (the petrol trade) pay in sterling?” Coming from one in his position, this shows extraordinary ignorance. Every intelligent motorist should know that in Britain private motorists get no petrol because so much of it has to be paid for in dollars. Whether New Zealand petrol comes from sterling or dollar sources, every saving in its use saves dollars for Britain. Incidentally, the name of the company referred to is the AngloIranian Oil Co., a minor point, but the president ought to know it. When the president displays such ignorance, it is not surprising that ordinary motorists cannot understand the need for saving. The sooper rationing comes the better. —Yours, etc.. A.A. MEMBER.
