TYPHOID AT KAIKOURA

Sir, —l have a complaint to make about the present epidemic of typhoid fever in Kaikoura. I left Christchurch on Monday morning last, intending to have a holiday there, but on the day after arrival there I heard the news of five cases in hospital and that others were suspects. Now if the doctor there knew 10 days before, why was it not published in the newspapers? In that case persons like myself would never have made the journey and would be several pounds better off in pocket. Needless to say, I did not lose any time in returning home, as I did not wish to carry the fever back to my home town.—Yours, etc., DISGUSTED.. Kaiapoi, October 23, 1947. [The presence of typhoid fever at Kaikoura was not confirmed by laboratory diagnosis- until the evening of October 22, and a statement appeared in “The Press” the following morning, said the Medical Officer of Health \Dr. J. H. Blakelock) when this letter was referred to him. He took all reasonable. steps to warn the public of the position, and rang Newman Bros.' Motor Services to let passengers know of the outbreak.]
