Miss V. Townsend, who was recently appointed headmistress of the Avonside Girls’ High School, will arrive in Christchurch frdm Timaru at the week-end and will take up her new duties on Monday. Miss Townsend is an old girl of Timaru Girls’ High School and has been principal of the school for some time.
Members of the Austral?Girton Association met yesterday at a pleasant luncheon reunion held at the National Club rooms. The association is composed of old girls of Girton -College, formerly a well-known private school, conducted in Dunedin by Miss F. J. Ross, who later became principal of Columba College, Dunedin. Specially invited guests were representatives of old girls’ associations of Nelson College, St. Margaret’s College, Columba College, Otago Girls’ High School, and Selwyn House, and these and members of the association were welcomed by the president (Mrs A. G. Brown). On behalf of the guests, Mrs E. Morris thanked Mrs Brown and the association for their hospitality. The Rev. E. G. Jansen and Mrs Jansen. who will leave soon to take up missionary work in China, were welcomed at a session of the Presbyterian General Assembly in Christchurch yesterday. On behalf of the Assembly, the Moderator (the Rt. Rev. J. D. Smith)'congratulated Mr and Mrs Jansen on their recent marriage. The Rev. R. G. McDowall and the Rev. D. N. Mac Diarmid referred to Mr Jansen’s previous service as a They praised a book, written by Mr Jansen and entitled “Jade Engraved,” in which missionary work in China during the Japanese war was described.
A meeting of the women’s branch of the Citizens’ Association, held yesterday in the Harmony Hall, Cashel street was addressed by Councillor R G.’ Brown and Mr A. N. Stone, a candidate for the City Council. Both speakers dealt interestingly with matters of civic importance, and were thanked by the president (Mrs G. H. Watts), who presided.
When the Women’s Royal New Zealand Naval Service was disbanded last year a gift of £5O was made from its welfare fund to buy portable wireless sets for, instlalation in the W.R.N.S. wards of the Royal Naval Hospital at Portsmouth. The Minister of Defence (Mr F. Jones) said yesterday that appreciation of the gift had been confrom the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty and from the surgeon rear-admiral in charge of the hospital.—(P. A.)
Members of the Speech and Story the Canterbury Women’s Club devoted last evening’s meeting to poetry. The guest speaker was Miss Mary Wigley, who told of poets with whom she .had been associated, and read some of her own poems. Others who contributed by reading their best writings were: Mrs N. F. H. McLeod, Mrs Helena Henderson, Mrs Amy Watt, Mrs R. J. McLaren, and Miss Laura’ Strahan.
