HEAVY LOSSES OF FRUIT
FIREBLIGHT IN HASTINGS DISTRICT (P.A.) HASTINGS, October 29. Heavy losses of fruit, particularly Ballarat and Sturmer apples, have been caused by a serious outbreak of fireblight in the Hastings district. The outbreak is a spur infection and so tar has not got into the heavy wood. It is so widespread and severe that immediate action by growers is called for in an effort to eradicate the disease. The outbreak was first observed in the Pakowhai district, but later it was reported in other areas. Pear and apple crops are giving every indication of yielding a record harvest this season and growers were congratulating themselves on having got through without any serious late frosts, but they now watch an invasion by the disease. They can do nothing to save the fruit from the infected spurs; the best they can do is to prevent the disease spreading.
