PROTEST MEETING IN CITY
“END OF FREEDOM FOR INDIVIDUAL ” A committee of returned servicemen ©f the Second World War. who are employed by insurance companies. in New Zealand will wait on the Prime Minister (Mr P. Fraser) to protest against the monopoly clause in the Workers Compensation Amendment Bill, according to a decision reached at a meeting of former servicemen in insurance companies in Christchurch yesterday. The meeting passed a resolution stating that it was of the opinion that State monopoly of employers’ liability insurance was a violation of the principles of freedom and of democracy for which members had fought. It was a question of conscience far above pounds, shillings or pence or charitable employment with the State Fire Insurance Office. The resolution added: “It is our conviction that the monopoly clause is the beginning of the end of freedom for the individual, and we are against any legislation euch as this, which is undemocratic and which takes away the freedom of the individual. We believe that any such legislation is a betrayal of those who gave their lives in World War II.”
