MOB OF WHITES SHOOT NEGRO

LYNCHING ATTEMPT IN MISSISSIPPI

(Rec. 7 p.m.) ABERDEEN (Mississippi). Oct. 28. The chief of police at Aberdeen, Mississippi (Mr John Barret), said today that a mob of about 20 white men attempted to lynch a negro on the night of October 25, but only wounded him.

He said the negro was “the wrong man, although he had been questioned earlier in the day about an attempted attack on a white woman.” Bloodhounds followed a trail to the house of the negro, named John Lloyd, but did not point specifically to him. Lloyd, after questioning by the police, was released, but a group of whites took him. beat him, and shot him in the spine and the arm. The police chief said that investigation showed that Lloyd was not at the scene at the time of the attempted attack on the woman.
