MAN FOUND DEAD IN MINE
BODY AT FOOT OF SHAFT (P.A.) AUCKLAND, October 6.
Falling 250 feet down the shaft of the Martha gold mine while apparently waiting for the cage, a mine surveyor was killed 1000 feet below ground this morning. He was Willia.xi Koy Carnachan, aged 49, a married man, of Waihi. Shortly before 10 o’clock Mr Carnachan was work-
ing alone on No. 7 level of the mine, 700 feet from the surface. He rang for the cage, but when the operator reached the level he found no one waiting and resumed his duties. When the operator returned 20 minutes later the level was still deserted. A search was made and Mr Carnachan’s body was found at the foot of the cage shaft.
Mr Carnachan, who is survived by his v’ife and five children, had been employed as a surveyor or assistant surveyor in the Martha mine for about 10 years.
CAR SOMERSAULTS FROM BRIDGE TO CREEK
A motor-car, driven by Mr Cyril Neville (Greymouth), was badly damaged when it struck the side of a bridge at Wainihihi, on the ’btiraGreymouth highway late on Sunday evening, and the three occupants had a remarkable escape from more serious injury. Mr Neville suffered a cut on the neck and abrasions, and one of the other occupants received a cut on the knee. The car somersaulted into the bed of the creek and the hood was extensively crushed. A similar accident occurred at the bridge some months ago.
