HOSTEL WORKERS’ WAGES
Sir, —I am employed as a part-time worker in a city boarding hostel. | Could you inform me if I am entitled to the “cost of living” rise in wages dated from last Monday, and are my employers entitled to keep the “6d in the £” wage tax, which was decreased last . April. The matron says that, as we are not covered by a union, our wages remain the same.—Yours, etc., CHARWOMAN. October 4, 1947. [The correspondent’s employer had no obligation to pay increased wages until amendments were made to the Private Hotel Employees’ Award, said the district superintendent of the Labour Department (Mr S. E. McGregor) when this letter was referred to him. Employers were required to deduct Is 6d in the £ wage tax plus tax for the value of any board or keep.]
