R. A. Hamilton, Laureate started smoothly in the first division to follow Flame ahd Conceit witn a furlong covered. Conceit droped back after going to a break with just over a mile covered, and Flame led mto the straight from Laureate and Merry Man. with gaps to Conceit, Mosquito, and Dame Durdin. With half a furlong to go Flame and Laureate and in a ,good finish Laureate won by a head. A six-year-old Lusty Volo mare. Laureate is a smart trotter and she should soon win again. Pat Review set the pace for about sevqii furlongs in the second division, but lie dismayed his supporters when he broke in the back straight. With half a mile to go, Tatsydale was leading from Lucrative, Steel Sword, Terry toon. Stray Shot, Rising Monarch, My Gffin, and Metropole. After following Tatsydale, Lucrative, and Terrytoon into the straight, Rising Monarch stuck to his gait in fine style under pressure to win by half a head from Lucrative with Tatsydale about two lengths away in third place. The winner of the Allenton Handicap at the Ashburton Trotting Club’s meeting on May 31, Rising Monarch has done well since being trained at Tinwald by C. M. Laing for Mr T. Flynn. An aged gelding, Rising Monarch is by Maxegin from Lady Josephine, which is by Gaillard from Garner, by Sonoma Harvester from Pat Dillon, by Great Audubon from Flossie Dillon, by Harold Dillon from a Mauritius mare. A good performer at the trotting gait. Garner is the dam of a high-class trotter in Surp Harvest, which won the H. F. Nicol Handicap *at the New Brighton Trotting Club’s meeting on September 27. Jottings

Durdin lost her chance when she broke at the start of the Drayton Trot Handicap at Meth ven on Saturday. Qnce on the journey, Dame Durdin showed some ability, and if she begins correctly she should not be troubled to win a race at the Oamaru Trotting Club’s meeting on October 8.

J. J. Brophy, the driver of Bull’s Eye, which dead-heated with Constellation in the . first division of the Westward Ho Handicap at Methven on Saturday, wai fined £lO tor failing to drive his horse out. A gelding by Quite Sure from Grattan Derby, Bull’s Eye showed a lot of speed after having 15 horses in front of him in thO early part, to take the lead with six furlongs to go. Bull’s Eye led into the straight from Constellation, Aloysius, Baadin, Gallant Thorpe, Arrow Hall, and Pierre. Brophy apparently thought he had the race won with a few yards to go and he did not use his whip as the winning post was reached. Constellation getting up to divide the prize money. * An aged gelding, Bull’s Eye was bred at Methven by Mr A. J. McLaughlin, who sold him to Mr H. Stafford, who in turn transferred him to Brophy. Bumpered Lady Ngaio, the favourite tor the Methven Cup at the Methven Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday, appeared to be hampered at the start and when the field settled down she was giving aWay starts 3° -> l6 J? or ?es. Once she was balanced, Lady Ngaio showed a lot of speed to be eighth* to cross the line at thfe . finish.
