METHVEN CLUB

TROTTING

DILLONDALE WINS CUP TONY GRATTAN’S BIG DIVIDEND Tony Grattan’s win dividend of I P 7 °*' e than a,.century when he just shaded Volo Audubon in the S. G. Holmes Memorial Handicap, a sterling performance by Dillondale to win the Methven Cup, a deadheat in the first division of the Westward Ho Handicap, and exciting finishes in botn the divisions of the Drayton Trot Handicap, the Mount Harding Handicap, and the Riverbank Trot Handicap, were features of the Methven Trotting Clubs meeting on Saturday. , . The weather was fine, the track m good order, and a large crowd invested £53,521, compared with £50,038 10s on the corresponding day last year. The first two races were run in divisions, causing a delay of an hour. More time was lost throughout the afternoon with the result that, although few . tickets were being sold, the totalisator was still open an hour and a quarter after the last event was scheduled to start. The popularity of trotting has outmoded the facilities available at Methven, and the provision of more accommodation is a serious matter for the consideration of .the executive of. the club. . . Dillondale, Which had gained one feurth placing in his first five races this season, was allowed to go out 15-16 in the betting on .the Methven Cup, and he returned his supporters a dividend of more than a third of a century when he finished on gamely to win by a neck from Mountain Hall and Bel Hamed, which dead-heated for second place. Driven by his owner-trainer, S. A. Edwards, Dillondale, which started from the 36 yards mark, was following Aspanall, Traverse, Wade Lane, Right Royal, Minmi Boy, Ann Scott, Imperial Grattan, Sprayman, and Mountain Hall with a mile to go, but he improved his position to be handy to the leaders as the field approached the

entrance to the straight. Aspanall, Right Royal, Traverse, Wade Lane, Imperial Grattan, Mountain Hall. Ingle Belrhet, Dillondale, and Bel Hamed were all possibilities as the field straightened up for the sprint home. With a furlong tc go. Mountain Hall appeared as the likely winner, but Dillondale responded to Edwards's vigorous driving and he carried on to win the first prize of £650 and a handsome canteen of cutlery.

A consistent pacer, Mountain Hall gave his usual honest display and he should not be long in winning a race for Mr H. C. Robinson. An aged son of Dillon Hall and Mountain Jewel, Mountain Hall has raced well since being trained at New Brighton to register two wins and four second placings in his last seven starts. Bel Hamed, which disappointed in her two races at the Auckland Trotting Club’s recent meeting, momentarily appeared as the winner with about 50 yards to go, and on this display, she should win races this season for Mr C. L. Rhodes, tor whom she is trained by T. H. Gunning at Temuka.

The Sprint Making his first 1 appearance since rejoining C. M. Laing’s stable at Tinwald, Tony Grattan finished on gamely under pressure to win the S. G. Holmes Memorial Handicap from Volo Audubon, which was making his first appearance since, joining D. A. Withers’s team. Nelsonova and Lady Spray lost their chances when they broke at the start and when the field settled down - Lottie Jinks was leading from Wee Logan, Tony Grattan, Slavonic, Admiration, Pocket Book, Sandy Potts, Volo Audubon, Final Count, Dandy Grattan. Sandy’s Epic, Sea Max, Maalesh and Johnnie Lawn Volo Audubon improved his position to lead from Slavonic, Sandy's Epic, Wee Logan, Tony Grattan, Dandy Grattan, and Johnny Lawn with two furlongs to go. A furlong from home Volo Audubon was clear, but Tony Grattan gradually overhauled him and in a fine finish he won narrowly.' Sandy’s Epic, which gave a solid display to earn the third prize for Mt L. W. Cox, for whom he is trained by W. R. Butt, won three races at the trotting gait last season. An aged gelling by U Scott or Sandydale from Epilogue, Sandy’s Epic is a useful type and he appeals as an early winner as. a pacer. A Good Stayer Good Review, which had gained a second placing and a third placing in his first two races this season, justified his confident support by winning the Avonmore Handicap from Demetrius. Good Review appeared to be hampered at the start and with five furlongs covered he was foHowing Rimmo, Sandiford, Special Effort, Tungsten Steel, Thelma Grattan, Demetrius, Hydro Belle, Justify, Lottie Jinks, King’s Messenger, and Free Fight. R. H. Butterick improved his position in the back straight with Good Review, and' with two furlongs to go he had him in fifth place to Sandiford, Demetrius, Rimmo, and Lottie Jinks. .Once the straight was reached Demetrius finished well, but Good Review stayed on to get the decision by half a head, A solidly-made son of Sandydale and Credit Funds, Good Review should not be troubled to win in much better company than he met on Saturday. After following Lucky Potts, Dillonia Queen, Gold Nip, and Ellery Queen in the early part of. the Mount Harding Handicap, His Excellency appeared to think that his task was completed when he took the lead m the straight and his driver, D. C. Watts, was forced to give him several sharp cuts with the whip to bring him home a winner by the narrowest of margins from Peter Potts. A good-looking four-year-old horse by Jack Potts from Judith, His Excellency is trained at Templeton by F. E. Upton for Messrs °. T. and O. G. Evans, vyho had the misfortune to lose a foal by His Excellency when it was struck by lightning on their farm at Hawarden last week.
