AWARDS FOR BRAVERY
ROYAL HUMANE SOCIETY OF NEW ZEALAND
Eleven awards, one of which is posthumous, have been made by the Royal Humane Society of New Zealand to New Zealanders who risked their lives in attempting to save other persons in danger. Medallions and letters of commendation will be sent out from the society’s headquarters in Christchurch in the next few days.’ Mr R. W. Robson, aged 85, of 119 Malcolm avenue, Beckenham, . Christchurch, has befen awarded a letter of commendation for. his rescue of a two-year-old girl from the Heathcote river at Eastern terrace on December 8. 1946. The girl, Marie Trebilcock, of 73 Corson avenue, slipped into the river through some reeds on the bank. The highest honour of the group has been awarded to Mr E. A. Sell, of Dunedin, who will receive the silver medallion for rescuing two 14-year-old girls and a man from the sea at Waikouaiti Beach on March 16, 1946. A posthumous award of the bronze medallion and the memoriam certificate has been made to Mr W. I# Paterson, aged 17, of Dunedin, whp lost his life while attempting to rescue the two girls. * Two awards have been made for the rescue of a nine-year-old girl from the Molyneux riyer on February 17, 1947. Mr William K. Bligh, of Roxburgh. will receive the bronze medallion, and Mr W. J. P. Kerr a letter of commendation.
Mr T. A Dodson and his son Harry .Dodson, who rowed out in a dinghy to rescue three' young persons clinging to the bottom of their yacht which capsized in a southerly storm at Plimmerton reef on October 20, 1946, have both been awarded a bronde medallion.
Mr A. Clouston, of Wellington, has been awarded the bronze medallion for a rescue effected from a canvas canoe in a choppy sea. For attempting to rescue 11-year-old Peter McCartie, who was drowned on January 20, Shirley Norton, aged 12, of Henderson, has been awarded a letter of commendation, and the same award will be sent to William Howe, aged 12. of Milford, who rescued Shirley Manning, aged 10, of Milford, when she was being carried out to sea while swimming. For jumping from a moving train and pulling Mr J. Barlow out of a creek, Mr Alan Perry, of Nae Nae, has been awarded a letter of commendation.
