CITY COUNCIL AFFAIRS

Sir,—lt has been truly said that it is not the Labour Party that wins elections; it is their opponents, who defeat themselves. We seem to be running true to form. To begin with, we have a squabble over the Mayoralty, and immediately divide our camp into two. Then the present council blunders into a series of stupid mistakes. The Mayor goes haywire over the architects’ report, without rhyme or reason. The next, the Hagley Park ill-conceived idea, which rightly aroused the public’s displeasure. Now it is the demolition of a house, because it does not quite comply with some by-law; and the occupants will probably have to squeeze into one room, or perhaps a garage. To Complete the picture, the council suggests removing the tombstones in two cemeteries and playing football and cricket on the graves of our ancestors. Oh! my goodness, is there no limit to their folly?—Yours, etc., THE OWL. October 2, 1947.
