WOOL TEXTILES OUTPUT
INCREASE OF 12 PER CENT. SOUGHT LONDON, October 1. “Representatives of the employers and the trades unions have suggested to the wool textile industry measures to achieve the immediate 12 per cent, production increase for which Sir Stafford Cripps appealed,” says the “Yorkshire Post.” “The measures are* (1) extending working hours to the maximum which the individual mills need to achieve the increase; (2) the most efficient use of working time; (3) reduction of avoidable unpunctuality and absenteeism.
“Some wool textile mills in the West Riding have already arranged for overtime. A joint conference report said that even the present low level of four clothing coupons a month could be met only if there was a rapid increase of 12 per cent, in output. Failure to achieve this increase would mean a further reduction in the number of coupons. Any increase in the coupon level would require eventually a much greater output increase than 12 per cent.” Sixteen Die in Theatre Fire.—Sixteen persons were burned to death and many were injured when fire destroyed the Teatro Margot, the leading film theatre in Managua (Nicaragua). The damage is estimated at 400,000 dollars.—New York, October
