CATTLE STEALING ALLEGED
TWO MEN COMMITTED FOR TRIAL
(P.A.) GISBORNE, October 2. On three charges of defacing brands on cattle, and one charge of theft of stock valued at £27, Rangi Pohoiwi was committed to the Supreme Court at Gisborne for trial by Justices of the Peace at Ruatoria to-day. George Waerehu was committed for trial on a charge of theft of stock valued at £B4. In the case against Pohoiwi, the manager of Haha Station, Rangitukia, said that he discovered six heifers with the accused’s brand superimposed on the Haha brand. As a result, the police mustered stock on the property of accused and found frim to be in possession of another six heifers with his own brand and earmark added to the Haha brand.
Evidence against Waerehu showed that the owner of Pine Taotu attended a stock, sale at Potaka on March 12 and sold 10 cows and 10 calves. Later he recognised the same 10 cows and calves being sold again, and on inquiries found that the accused had put the animals into the sale.
