SHORTAGE OF WAGGONS

Sir, —In your report of the conference last week to discuss the turnround of ships, a railway official stated that the shortage of waggons was caused partly by importers not having sub-licences. Is this not just another excuse put forward by the department to explain the indifferent service given? It would be interesting to know how much of the congestion in the sheds is caused this way, and, indeed, how much congestion there is in the sheds. Officials are too fond of putting up smoke screens.—Yours, etc., INTERESTED. October 1, 1947. [lf “Interested” cared to report at the District Traffic Manager’s office he would be shown through the sheds and could form his own conclusions then, said the assistant traffic manager (Mr S. R. Sexton) when this letter was referred to him.]
