FRIAR MEMORIAL PRIZE

CADETS NOMINATED FROM AREAS

Area nominations for the William Robert Friar Memorial Prize have been received at Southern Military District Headquarters. This prize is presented annually to the secondary school cadet n.c.o. who is judged to be the most efficient in each military district in New Zealand.

The cadets recommended from the four areas in the South Island are:— Area 9 (Nelson), C.S.M. C. M. Waters, of Marlborough College; Area 10 (Canterbury). U/Officer E. R. McCalman, Christchurch Boys’ High School; Area 11 (Otago), R.S.M. S. G. Hunter, Waitaki Boys’ High School, Oamaru; Area 12 (Southland), Sergeant J. R. Thompson, Gore High School.

The district commandant will select the most efficient of these four cadets and he will receive the district prize. A similar procedure is followed in the Northern Military District and the Central Military District, and Army Headquarters submits the three names to the secretary of the Imperial Cadet Association in England, who sends the prizes of books to New Zealand.

Southern Military District cadets who won the prize in the 'last five years were:—l946, R.S.M. McDermott, Southland Boys’ High School; 1945, C.S.M. H. R. Wilson, Gore High School; 1944, C.S.M. W. E. Chisholm, King’s High School; 1943, R.S.M. J. L. Chaytor, Nelson College; 1942, Sergeant B. F. Edwards, Gore .igh School. Token of Regard In 1908 Earl Roberts instituted Imperial cadet educational journeys to and from the Dominions. The first cadet to go to England and be welcomed by Earl Roberts was Colour Sergeant W. R. Friar, of Onehunga. He won second prize in each of two of the principal competitions at the Bisley rifle meeting and was presented with a rifle by Earl Roberts. Mr Friar served in the first world war and was killed in Flanders in 1917. In his memory and as a token of regard from cadets in Britain, the. prizes are presented annually to the most efficient cadet in each of the three military districts in New Zealand.
