DIVERSION TO OTHER WORK SOUGHT
EMPLOYERS RELUCTANT TO ACCEPT “SPIVS”
(Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.) (Rec. 8 p.m.) LONDON, September 30. Speaking at Oxford, Sir Godfrey Ince, permanent the Ministry of Labour, said tlftt whatever was done to direct “spivs" into industry it could not make any serious contribution to relieving the manpower shortage. Employers were most reluctant To employ “spivs," and many thought that if this type of individual were directed into their factories they would have a disastrous influence upon production. . The Government is not expected to direct all football pool workers into other industries but to offer a substantial proportion of pool employees alternative employment. The Government proposes to use persuasion rather than direction in an effort to secure at least 20,000 additional female workers from the pools. It will be for the various pool firms to decide what action they will take to continue their busineThe* allocation of paper to football pools is expected to be halved.
