N.Z. THANKED FOR FOOD
LETTER OF “ENGLISH HOUSEWIFE ” (Rec. 8 p.m.) LONDON, September 29. A letter has been received by the London office of the New Zealand Press Association from a woman who asks that her thanks be conveyed to New Zealand for food parcels. She asks to be referred to as “English Housewife,” in case the giving of her name and address should be regarded as a hint for further parcels. She says: “I am just an ordinary housewife with a husband and three children. I would like to tell you how grateful families are in England to New Zealand. Many times at meals during the war I used to tell my children how thankful they should be to the Merchant Navy for getting our food through to us. Now the bombs and submarines are gone, but we still have a shortage. Being human, we grumble, but I now point out to my children that if it was not for our Dominions and colonies we should not have butter and many other things on our table.
“Not knowing any New Zealanders personally, I feel that we shall never be able to say ‘Thank you’ properly, so I want to take this chance of saying ‘Thank you’ to thousands of New Zealanders.” She added that she would like to receive letters from New Zealanders, “but no parcels, please.”
