IMPORT CUTS BY AUSTRALIA
New Dollar Savings To Be Made URGENT APPEAL FROM BRITAIN (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 11 p.m.) CANBERRA, Sept. 29. More import cuts from the dollar areas will be imposed by the Australian Government after an urgent appeal from Britain. The resulting restrictions may exceed in severity those experienced during the war years. • Britain wants Australia to bridge the gap of 60,000,000 dollars between her export earnings and her import expenditure, but possibly the new cuts will not reach this figure. Apart from giving the information that the new cuts would be imposed almost immediately, the Minister of Customs (Senator B. Courtice) could say nothing definite on the goods to be restricted. He indicated, however, that the dollar cuts already imposed had been found to be grossly inadequate, and that the greatest dollar expenditure was on tobacco, petrol, newsprint, films, and textiles.
