PHILIPPINES AND SPAIN
FRIENDSHIP TREATY DEFENDED
NO CONFLICT SEEN WITH U.N. RESOLUTION
(Rec. 7 p.m.) MANILA, September 28. The Philippines Foreign Minister <Mr Elpidio Quirano) and the Spanish Minister to the Philippines (Mr Teodomiro de Aguilar) declared at a joint press conference to-day that the new Spanish-Philippines treaty of friendship signed yesterday did not violate the United Nations resolution on Spain.
They called the conference after some Manila newspapers had suggested that the treaty conflicted with the United Nations resolution, which asked member nations to recall their ambassadors and ministers from Madrid. Mr Quirano said that the resolution did not prohibit any member having friendly relations with Spain, but should the United Nations decide to cut off entirely all relations with Spain it would then be time for the Philippines to discontinue the treaty with the former mother country.
